So, about that Windows 7 Release Candidate…

May 21, 2009

It’s working good enough on my system, which has a 1.8Ghz Core 2 Duo, nVidia 8600GT, and 2 hard drives.  During some downloads, it appears to download at much higher KB/s than with Windows XP.  Most programs run and install fine with a couple exceptions:

  • Microsoft Visual C++/C# requires space on both hard drives for some strange reason, even though it’s already on the XP hard drive. SharpDevelop on the other hand, runs like usual.
  • Installing the K-Lite Codec Pack doesn’t put subtitles in my videos when using the Media Player Classic that comes with it, but the subtitles do show up in Windows Media Player. On my XP disk, it’s the opposite.
  • The two things that have caught me off guard so far are the presence of a “System Reserved” drive E:\ that only shows up in XP and doesn’t have any visible files in it, and that during installation, the master boot record for the primary drive got overwritten regardless of Windows 7 being installed to a partition on the secondary drive.  Such overwriting corrupted my GRUB on that primary drive and made its Ubuntu Linux installation unbootable.  One primary drive wipe and XP partition expansion later, Windows 7 successfully installs to the primary disk.  Now if only I knew how to edit the boot loader to boot either OS rather than having to change the BIOS settings to go from Windows XP to Windows 7…
